Eric Lefkofsky founded Groupon and his newest venture, Tempus in 2015, succeeding as a top Chicago startup. Tempus is a cancer care startup. Cancer is a sub-category within a category of cancer illness. Cancer as subcategory is about different types of illness. Cancer results from a growth of abnormal cells that become tumors. Tumors metastasize to other areas of the body eventually resulting in death. Cancer is a genetic disease resulting from dysfunction in genes. Cancer patient treatment needs to be stored as records in a better way than it has been. Records are a collection of doctor’s notes, lab tests, diagnoses, remissions, and exacerbations. Tempus has invented a software platform to analyze both molecular and clinical data.
Cancer treatment requires collection as well as analysis of data. Tempus tries to analyze that data with partnerships with hospitals and academic institutions. It provides gene-sequence tests from a laboratory at its River North headquarters. Physicians are provided with software-based solutions that start a fast comparison of a patient’s genetic profile in a database of other cancer patients and their lab results. Lefkofksy had a problem with the way cancer information is organized. He also came up with the solution. He feels that in five or ten years the average oncologist would use Tempus, a company with an operating system built to fight cancer.
